課程概述

This course will focus mainly on reading and reading strategies, accompanying with weekly listening tactics. Regarding to reading and reading strategies, the aim is to help students to approach written material with different objectives, to read for meaning, and to process information and ideas as students read. One library tour will be arranged this semester and various English resources will be briefly introduced. One writing practice will also be provided, to assist students generate and develop ideas for writing well-organized paragraphs on topics related to class contents. For listening tactics, in order to give students experience with listening to a variety of text types, course material would be taken from online resources, TV, video clips, and all kinds of audio clips from various textbooks

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK:
Mosaic 1: Reading by Brenda Wegmann and Miki Knezevic, 2007, McGraw-Hill Companies.

JOURNAL WRITING: Everyone needs to turn in 3 journals this semester. Topics will be given and submission onto ceiba is required.

FINAL PROJECT: At the end of the semester, everyone is required to turn in a 1.5-to-2-page project (not including illustrations, tables, charts etc.) of a topic of your own choice. Conduct an Internet search on your chosen topic and 3 (at least) related articles from the Internet have to be attached to the submitted final term paper.

SICKNESS AND ABSENCE POLICY: Students are required to submit a medical certificate or any official absence forms.

EVALUATION: Students' grades will be based on attendance records, assignments, in-class discussion, presentation, participation, quizzes, one midterm exam and one final project.

Grading:
Assignments, oral presentation, writing, listening, and quizzes (35%~55%)
Midterm Exam (15%~20%)
Drama play (10%~15%)
Final project (15%~20%)
Participation (5%~10%)
Cheating (-50%)
